How to Use This Calculator

The target heart rate calculator estimates a training heart rate using age, resting heart rate, and workout intensity. It is useful for planning cardio sessions and comparing easy, moderate, and hard efforts.

Formula

Target heart rate = (estimated max heart rate - resting heart rate) x intensity + resting heart rate. Estimated max heart rate = 220 - age.

Example

A 35-year-old with a resting heart rate of 65 bpm has an estimated max of 185 bpm. At 70% intensity, the target is about 149 bpm.

Common Tips

  • The 220 minus age formula is only an estimate.
  • Beginners should usually start with lower intensities.
  • Stop exercising and seek help if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or unusual shortness of breath.
